Confessions of an Immigrant-7

Hello lovelies,

I am back with yet another confession and I know many of you were waiting for my update but I was stuck with a Canadian Dynamite called Mid- Term. Finally its over and my Reading Week too. The latest event being my Cousin’s Ladies Sangeet. This weekend was more than fun, excitement and a roller coaster ride. I really loved the decoration. It was combination of Punjabi and Gujarati culture which I was looking forward to. There was a stall where mehandi keeps, parandi, bangles and some other sweets were there. Everything was from home, starting from scented candles, with stands, hukkas, cushions, colourful curtains, umbrellas. Now umbrella had something different in it. They were stitched with phulkari dupattas which made them look more ethnic. Further, I met my relatives which was an amazing catchup with cousins and family. We danced alot and some of the dance was choreographed.

Bride’s Mom

Coming to the bridal shower which I had missed was also a great show and I just have a picture of it. I wish I could attend the bridal shower. But there were some props too like ‘Bride to be’, ‘Bride’s friends’ or some ‘bridemates’ etc.

Sisterly Love

Mid Terms didnt seem like mid terms. We had no holidays and they were taken place in the given periods only and in given time. So, it was not like our Indian system that the exams and datesheets were given, then we used to give exams and go back. We practically had no datesheets. For 2 subjects we had mid term quiz which we had in the class and it was objective. All the papers were objective except the two. But I couldn’t feel like that I was giving any exam. We have to answer in the question paper only so we are not given the question papers back.

first time gulab Jamun in Canada 🙂

The assignments were interesting but hectic. My group gave our best and we could score well in that. For the first time, I got a chance to compile the work and then only I realised how tough it is to be mechanical and go in a sync when it comes to compiling the work of different people into one. Some experiences are always different, yet it teaches us a new lesson.

The next best segment was the live concert. I still don’t know who the singers were and my apologies for being so naive. There was a restaurant opening and the customers were given free food and some discounts for the other food if we order. The music just relieved my nerves and I wore a gown.

Author’s Advice: Life is easy but it is on us, how we handle it, either by complicating it or by just facing the reality and moving on with a positive spirit.

Book Review of The Quest of the Sparrows

The Quest of the Sparrows by Kartik Sharma and Ravi( Nirmal Sharma) is a religious and a spiritual fiction which enlightens our minds. For a change it is not a love story and this genre actually got my attention as I have rarely read this type. I am glad that I picked up this book.

The cover of the book is simple and elegant. It somewhere serves the motive of the authors and their message. The sparrows serve as a symbolic figure.

The title is relevant and has some sort of symbolism in it. Sparrows play as a catalyst in it.

A seemingly ordinary young man forced to become a guru takes a leap of faith and sets off with his followers on a taxing journey that changes their mindsets and lives forever. Inspired by the carefree life of a sparrow, reluctant guru Partibhan takes off on a 600 kilometre expedition on foot to test his theory of practical spirituality. He believes that human beings can become powerful creators, but the desire to secure the future makes them mere survivors. However, survival isn’t the only goal of life. A much bigger role, a higher calling awaits us. Will Guru Partibhan and his disciples complete the journey? Will they discover their true potential and find everlasting joy? Looks at the importance of spirituality in today’s fast paced world. A must read for all those feeling burnt out and wondering about the ‘higher purpose’ of their lives. The story of a young man who finds his calling in life, written in a relatable manner.

The story is beautifully woven. The authors have kept in mind the thought process and at times we feel they are playing with ur minds. The use of multiple point of views makes it interesting. Every story has some significance and they can be used as separate stories as well. Basically is focus on a man and even Guru Partibhan who through his ways gives us a purpose of living. The delineation is apt. The characters are fantastic and easy to understand though the authors tried to make it complicated.

Coming to writing style, this is just so perfect. The multiple point of views, stream of consciousness thoughts makes it perfect. Some of the liners deserve to be preserved as quotes. The authors have done full justice to the book and kuddos for bringing up such a different concept.

Book Review of Doubles or Quits?

Story at a glance

81ax4iqr5-l

Racy, realistic and fast paced, Double or Quits traces Jyotsna Singh’s story against the backdrop of the treacherous stock markets.
Losing her father at the age of 12 and brought up under frugal circumstances, Jyotsna grows up too soon. Nervy and edgy by nature, she morphs into a confident and charming young woman with a successful career in Investment Banking.
Enter Aryan Sahani, rising corporate star and billionaire who wraps Jyotsna in his charms, but has plans of his own. Driven by her loyalty to the firm, a desire to break out of her lower middle class moorings and misplaced love, Jyotsna overreaches. She is soon faced with the dark side of the stock markets – a world where ambition, greed and fear rule and reputations are lost a lot faster than they are built.
Will Jyotsna be able to resurrect her life? Will she find the true love she has been craving? Double or Quits is a tale of love, betrayal and courage. It is a tale about falling down, but not staying down.

Review

Double or Quits by Shilpa Gupta is an inspiring novel. It is full of motivation and messages. The characters are the mouthpiece of the author and the way she conveys their thoughts is remarkable. The cover of the book surely mesmerize the readers. The color scheme is just apt. The title surely matches the view points shared in the book. We get to know this at the end of the novel.

The plot is gripping and keeps the readers hooked till the end. The story revolves around Jyotsna and the way she makes a place in the society, how she handles the situations without any fear. The book is a roller coaster where we find the hero much later.

The theme of love, friendship, work takes a complete space in the book. Whereas we come to know about the life in a jail. It is difficult though, yet the way it is delineated is appreciable.

The characterization is stupendous. The way the author has highlighted Jyotsna’s character is worth appreciating. Her love, ambitions, struggles surely move the readers and even we end up crying at places. Aryan Sahani is a billionnaire who wants to make Sahani Hospitals a hit by any means. He is infatuated with Jyotsna. The way the things move between them and turn out is a shock for the readers. Nitin’s role is really important and for that you surely need to read this book.

The style of writing is simple, lucid and interesting. The third person narrative and impersonal descriptions makes it organised. The flashbacks are there in between and one surely loves it. The editing is perfectly done and this book can be converted into a movie.

Book Review of Who Will Cry When You Die?

Who Will Cry When You Die? by Robin Sharma is a non fiction self help book. This book surely changes our outlook of looking at life. This is true that nobody has time for us, doesn’t matter if we live or die. A person will mourn for us for one day, two day or more than a month but slowly the memories will fade away. I know it is a New Year and I am talking about death here. But the truth I realized when I had lost a dear one. It is not that we don’t miss the person but slowly we learn to without them. When I had lost my grandfather, I used to mourn at his death. But now its been more than 6 years since he left us. I have accepted the fact that he is not around us but that doesn’t mean I never loved him. In all this, I learnt that we need to live our present for our life is too short to keep grudges, fights or anything.

The title of the book surely leaves in deep thoughts. It is not just a title but a question in itself that Who Will Cry When You Die? This reminds us of the time when we are busy in our professional life and miss the love of our family. It gives you a strong motive to pick up this book and know the reason as the book is so gripping in itself.

When you are born the World rejoice while you cry. Live a life in a such a way that when you DIE, the World should cry and you rejoice’ – Ancient Sanskrit Saying.

Robin Sharma’s book ‘Who Will Cry When You Die?’ is based on the above lines. Sharma talks about 101 ‘Life Principles’ you need to follow to die peacefully and worth-fully.

There is no plot or characters as in this book as it is a self help book. The way the author has talked about various aspects of life in form of 101 chapters is mind blowing. Some lines just touched my heart and I would surely quote them below.

The style of writing is poignant and the author gives us many references, iterations of his points. He has beautifully sculpted his points and one can just fall in love with the way he explains. No doubt, people admire him for his life lessons. He talks about corporate life, he talks about his personal life, he talks about his friends, then some experiments he ask his readers to perform. One feels comfortable while reading it and with the ease he explains is just enthralling. Some of my most loved quotes are:

‘When you were born, you cried while the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die the world cries while you rejoice’

‘Kindness, Quite simply is the rent we must pay for space we occupy on this planet.’
