Book Review of The American Indian Dream

The American Indian Dream by Pranay Sahu is novel full of emotions, dreams and decisions. Sometimes we tend to take such decisions which change our lives. THis book is about such decision.

Cover- THe cover of the book has black and yellow colour scheme along with a picture of a man who seems thinking. This reminds us of the time when the protagonist takes the biggest decision of his life. Or we can say, the time of his calling.

Title- The title is challenging and the readers think alot about the reason like why the word’American’is being striked off and why the author has not used ‘The Indian Dream’. Well, this confusion or rather say the pool of questions are answered when we read the last line of the book. We come to know the purpose of the writer while coming up with this title.

Blurb- His life was his dream. From being a Wall Street Investment Banker to being a jobless put under spiritual arrest, to being hopelessly in love with a hippie ten years elder to becoming an entrepreneur , he lived his dreams throughout his life.

Cut to 2012, destiny’s favourite child is now controversy’s favourite child. Come success, come controversy. Controversies are inevitable, one’s reaction to them, is optional. Roshan should not have reacted.

Four years since he lost his job, Roshan is now battling his life after multiple gun shots; defending his actions before a spiritual guru whom he does not like at all. But life is not always your choice. The difference between dreaming and making dreams come true is what life is all about.

PLot- The plot is neatly woven and the way the story is being depicted is appreciable. The story revolves around Rohan and his struggles. The end is a mystery which opens the chapters of history.

Characterisation- The characters played an amazing part in thi=e progression of the novel.  Apart from Roshan, there are Jagat, Ira, Hirenbhai, Silvio, Ariella aka Lakshmi, Maera, Gurudev and his henchman Farhaan. The love affair between Roshan and Ariella seems convoluted. Some characters are round here while some are flat.

Style- The author has used simple and lucid language to convey his ideas. The use of varied range of sentences adds flavour to the story. The pace of the story is languid. The author beautifully helps us in clearing some of the notions that we have about an American Dream. The concept of the book is an icing on the cake. Some lines just take away our heart.Like:

“The difference between dreaming and making dreams come true is what life all about.”

“It is indeed a dream, the American Dream, made in India”

As we know,Every coin has a flip side, hence this book has too. There are certain loose ends in the story whereas the editing could been better. But one cannot ignore the amazing concept of the book.
