Guest Post by Varsha Dixit

Hello lovelies,

Today I would like to introduce a stunning author who is known for her romantic works. She is none other than our extremely talented Varsha Dixit whose latest release Rightfully Wrong Wrongfully Right has hit the market. Lets see what she has to say in her guest post. Over to you maam..:)

“We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.”

—Ernest Hemingway

Writing romance is no different from writing thrillers or writing horror or autobiographies. I strongly feel how one writes is way more important than what one writes. The latter just makes it easy for the bookstore staff to identify which shelf your book belongs in.

However, all authors have their genres that they are comfortable writing in. Their fortes! Much like Usain Bolt who can burn the tracks with his speed and win medals galore. However, give Usain a tennis racket and see what happens. Probably nothing! For track is his forte tennis isn’t.

Having written five romance novels, writing romance is my forte. That’s my bolt! Just like a sweet smelling scone has some basic ingredients, every written genre has some key ingredients.  I will not delve into other genres but focus on the genre that I’m most adapt in. Romance!

  • Attraction and love between the protagonists.
  • A conflict or a problem that keeps them apart or some tension/situation that does not allow them to unite.
  • A potent and sizzling chemistry
  • Finally a resolution to the conflict thus uniting the couple.

The above-mentioned points are the basic elements of a romance story.  Like a body’s skeleton!

When writing romance, make your characters rich, keep the story moving at a good pace and give details to your descriptions. Make your book the kind that if the reader was to close his or her eyes they could imagine the whole story play out like a movie. Readers will spend their precious hours only with those books, which hold their attention.

Also, avoid using flat words like, ‘almost’, ‘finally’, ‘merely’, ‘nearly’ etc.  Making your writing action oriented. Show the readers the scene, don’t preach it!

Romance should make readers laugh, cry and fall in love much like the protagonists of the book.

Thank you Surbhi for hosting my book, ‘Rightfully Wrong Wrongfully Right’, and guest post on your blog. Good luck to you in your writings.
